Who we are
Kootu is a messaging app made by Kochu Mansoor. This page explains what information the app uses and how you can control it.
What we collect
• Your phone number and the name you choose. • Your profile photo, if you add one. • Your messages, photos, voice messages and shared locations, so they can be delivered to the people you chat with. • A notification token, so your phone can receive message and call alerts. • Whether you are online, and whether you are typing.
Permissions the app asks for
• Microphone: voice messages and calls. • Camera: video calls and profile or chat photos. • Location: only when you choose to share your location in a chat. • Notifications: new message and call alerts.
How we use it
Only to run the app: log you in, deliver messages and calls, show your name and photo to your contacts, and send notifications. We do not sell your data and we do not show ads.
Security
Data is stored on our server. Your login uses a secret token that is stored only as a hash on the server. Messages are not end-to-end encrypted: the server can technically read them.
Access by the Kootu administrator
The Kootu administrator can view data stored on the server through a password-protected admin page. This includes account names and phone numbers, profile photos, status posts, messages and the photos, voice messages, videos, documents and one-time media you send, including in groups. This is used only to keep the service running and safe: to look into reports of abuse, spam or illegal content, to fix problems, and to follow the law. It is not used for advertising and is never sold or shared for marketing. If you delete a message for everyone, or delete a message you sent to an administrator, the administrator may still be able to see it. Messages you hide with "Delete for me" are removed only from your own view. By using Kootu you agree to this access. If you do not agree, please do not use the app.
Your choices
You can change your name and photo in Profile. You can delete your account at any time from Profile → Delete account. This removes your account, your messages, your group memberships and your notification tokens from our server.
Children
Kootu is not meant for children under 13.
